Description

The largest district of Vienna by area is made up of the districts of Stadlau, Kagran, Hirschstetten, Aspern, Lobau, Süßenbrunn, Breitenlee, Eßling and Kaisermühlen. Here, the Danube had room for numerous overflows and flooding and carried the water deep into Marchfeld.  The area of Donaustadt was covered with thick forests along the river in pre-Christian, or rather Roman times and influenced by Cells and Romans. Today the lowland forest in Lobau is a nature reserve and pays tribute to that history by providing recreation and a habitat for people and animals.

At the beginning of the last millennium, Stadlau was a fiefdom of the Duke of Babenberg who bestowed a "right of travel" to the settlement, as the Stadlau bank was the starting point to cross over to Stubentorlände. Therefore its residents, independent farmers, could bring all goods and products across the Danube and collect taxes for it.

Today, one of the most modern hospitals in Europe is located here, the social medical centre east in Stadlau that has kept its original character in spite of the unstoppable advance of modern residential buildings.
