Description
In a former floodplain between the Danube and the Danube Canal, on islands of the unregulated river, Leopoldstadt was founded. By 1900, it also contained the 20th district (Brigittenau) and by the beginning of the Second World War contained Kaisermühlen, which is today part of the 22nd district (Donaustadt).
The "Karmeliterviertel", which was originally made available to the Jewish population of Vienna and soon advanced to become their most important community, between Oberer Augartenstraße, Taborstraße and also the district borders, maintains its attractiveness not only because of its proximity to the city centre and therefore to the night-life of the "Bermuda Triangle".
The Augarten, which was known as an entertainment centre into the 19th century, is mainly known because of the local Vienna Porcelain Factory and the Vienna Boys' Choir, which are resident in the palace that was rebuilt in the 17th century and has been maintained to this day.
