Apartmenthaus Stättermayergasse

Stättermayergasse 15-17, Preysinggasse 18, 1150 Vienna

Description

The district of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus was covered by an ocean during the Mesozoic era that receded about 70 million years ago slowly creating an inland sea then forming terraces during the warm phases. Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus is located in the area of the oldest terrace that stretches from Laaer Berg via the Gloriette to Schmelz and Türkenschanze.

Significant events in the history of the district were, among others, the opening of the West Railway in 1858 with the West Train Station, the city railway that operates today as the underground railway, and the development of the Schmelz, the large parade and exercise square of the Royal and Imperial Army. After 1912, a new residential district was built here. Since its streets were mostly named after figures from "The Song of the Nibelungs", this district took on the unofficial name of "Nibelungenviertel ".

According to the original plan, a "Kaiser-Franz-Joseph city museum" was supposed to be built in the east of the Nibelungenviertel according to plans by Otto Wagner. This project was never realised. Instead, Vienna City Hall and the indoor city swimming pool were built in this area.

In 1890, the "Kaiser-Franz-Joseph Hospital in Rudolfsheim" was opened. It was built near the Schmelz water tank, today's Meiselmarkt. By Imperial Resolution, the hospital was renamed "Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Spital" in 1892. The Stättermayergasse apartment building is near the "Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Spital" hospital, right at the underground railway.
