Description
Kaisermühlen used to lead a tranquil existence before the Danube was regulated. Afterwards the ship mills and the Aspern coal mines moved to Freudenau and the steam ship dock was moved to the bank on the city side by the Reichsbrücke. The first bridge, whose foundation was placed on dry ground before the breakthrough, spanned the new river bed and the flood plain to Hubertusdamm, which was intended to provided safety from flooding by the Danube with the inundation area.
Construction of the Danube Island began in 1972. It was divided into multiple zones with different functions and covers ca. 390 hectares of green space. Its primary purpose is regulating the Danube in the city area of Vienna. Wide footpaths and cycling paths run through the entire area from sports fields to many large fields, restaurants, pubs and barbecuing areas to the border areas in the south and north of the island (more like a "wilderness"). In the south, some of the old branches of the Danube have been kept as smaller areas of water, creating a meadow like biotope, made even more impressive with the old stand of poplar trees.
The Donauuferautobahn motorway that runs along today's Danube Island, but also past Kaisermühlen, was bridged over in parts and built on the Kaisermühlen side of the residential park, and the Neue Donau high-rise building as well as a cinema centre were built.
