Description
Characteristic for Döbling, the largest wine growing area of Vienna, are the old townscapes with their vintner and Heurigen (wine taverns) villages like Grinzing, for example. When the Roman Caesar Probus lifted the prohibition against the planting of vineyards in the provinces in 276 AD, Roman legionaries cultivated the first grapevines on the hills around Grinzing. In 1784, when Josef II finally created the first, generally applicable, legal foundation for the Heurigen, where , among other things, serving your home-grown wine was allowed, prosperity arrived in the small villages of that time just outside the gates of Vienna, and later attained international fame.
In the 19th century, Döbling changed into a noble location as a summer resort. On the grounds of today's Heiligenstädter Park, there were public baths fed by a mineral-rich spring that also attracted the prominence of the Vienna cultural life, such as Ludwig van Beethoven who wrote the 2nd symphony, the piano variations op. 34 and 35, as well as parts of the three piano sonatas op. 30 here.
