Description
Liesing is made up of the districts of Atzgersdorf, Erlaa, Inzersdorf, Siebenhirten, Mauer, Rodaun, Kalksburg and other former Lower Austrian communities and extends from the Wienerwald along both sides of the Liesingbach creek to the Vienna Basin.
The names Liesing and Rodaun date back to Slavic origins from the 11th or 12th century. Findings have shown that mines were operated in Mauer even in the Neolithic period, and that the Romans met a mixed Celtic-Illyrian population at the beginning of our calendar system.
In the 15th century, the district had a thoroughly flourishing community with roots that were founded in its economy, mostly in viticulture, but also using the Liesingbach creek to run the mills.
After the Turkish siege and records documenting the complete destruction of the settlement, the Dorotheerstift commenced with its reconstruction work mainly with new Styrian settlers, and the castle was significantly expanded at the beginning of the 18th century by the Provost at that time, Ferdinand III Adler. The construction of the magnificent rock cellars below the Steinmaßl is attributed to his brother, Aquilin Adler. It is still used today as the cellar of the Liesing brewery, and during the bombing attacks in the Second World War, it offered protection for the threatened population.
