Description
Originally, Vienna was composed of only an "inner city" surrounded by a city wall. In the 15th century, areas in front of the city gates were densely settled and called "suburbs" or alternatively, "outskirts". Their incorporation in 1850 resulted in the creation of districts 2 to 20. In 1904, the large community of Floridsdorf became the 21st district, a part of Vienna whose new definition vis-à-vis the new 22nd district as well as lower Austria followed in 1954.
Since the turn of the century, Floridsdorf has developed into an industrial centre and therefore into a worker's district. Today, Floridsdorf is the second largest district of Vienna in size and in the number of residents.
In the mid-1990s, the new University of Veterinary Medicine was built in Floridsdorf. With the U6, the district is connected to the north and south of Vienna with its own underground railway connection.
The "Franz-Jonas-Platz" apartment building is almost right beside the underground connection, and its central location is enhanced by the parks of the nearby "water park', an enormous green zone that comprises the Danube, Old Danube and New Danube.
