Description
Hernals changed from its first mention in the 11th century (former fiefdom of "Herren von der Als") from being a wine-growing region, followed by farming to the summer retreat of the Viennese and got its city character in the 19th century when industrialisation edged into the former suburb due to the low cost of living there. Reformation and counter-reformation came into the district and remind the "metropolis" of the artistic heritage of the district as a traditional Viennese suburb establishment, where today mostly cultural events for a younger audience take place.
Structures like the Kalvarienberg Church and the millstone of the former Dornbach Alsbach mill are silent witnesses of the district's history, that last but not least was shaped by celebrities like two-time Olympic champion and multiple European and world champion in ice skating, Karl Schäfer, the famous author, Karoline Pichler, actor, Hansi Niese-Jarno and poet, Ferdinand Sauter.
