Description
On the left bank of the Danube in Marchfeld in the west, the settlement of "Am Spitz" was renamed to Floridsdorf in 1786 after Abbot Floridus Leeb of Klosterneuburger gave monastery lands to the settlers, and today it comprises the districts of Leopoldau, Stammersdorf, Jedlesee, Strebersdorf and Großjedlersdorf. Originally agricultural, Floridsdorf developed quickly due to numerous industrial facilities, the Nordwest Railway and the steam tramway that was introduced in 1885. In spite of numerous industrial and commercial businesses, the district was able to maintain its character as a city suburb with allotment gardens.
Well-known politicians of the district were Mayor Karl Seitz and the former book printer and later Federal President, Franz Jonas, who spent his youth in the Zuwanderer-Fonds building on Otto-Storch-Gasse.
In order to prevent further lowering of the groundwater level in Marchfeld, an almost 100 km long semi-natural water connection system was built. Another Zuwanderer-Fonds apartment building is located right on the Marchfeld canal that regulates the ground water balance and combines water management and ecological objectives.
