Description
The first mention of the name, "Wieden" was "Vulgariter widem dicitur" in the year 1211 in the dedication document of Leopold VI, the Glorious for the Heiliggeistspital hospital. After being destroyed twice during the Turkish Wars, the district that was incorporated twelve years earlier was given the borders that it has today in 1861/1862.
More than one hundred years ago, the "Belly of the Viennese", as the "Naschmarkt" is lovingly called, was moved to its present location. The Wieden apartment building is located nearby.
Even though former glorious buildings like the Palais Rothschild for example were forfeited, today the district has museums, theatres and, as a tribute to the present day media world, the broadcasting studios of ORF.
This locations opens itself up to night owls and culture freaks by being close to the city centre and the underground, but also through the district's own constellations of undreamed of possibilities.
