Description
Kagran was first mentioned in a document in 1199 as "Chagaran" (Danube surge bank), and this name describes the district before regulation of the Danube. Kagran was incorporated in 1904.
As of 1922, the steam tramway ran on electricity, and at the southern edge of the city, the mighty buildings of the Karlskaserne military barracks were built. Between the war years, Old Kagran, as it was commonly known, was a village; however the multi-storey buildings on Wagramer Straße, among others, gave it a city character. Kagran remained village-like for a long time. Since the 1970s, an almost enclosed residential area has spread out from the old town centre, consisting of multi-storey apartment complexes and single family homes. The district centre with district administration, justice, finance and police was situated in New Kagran on both sides of Wagram Straße. The "Danube Centre" has all kinds of shopping possibilities as well as various opportunities for recreation and culinary delights.
The entrance to the "Kagraner Spange" apartments is in Old Kagran, directly opposite the "Kagraner Platz" U1 underground station, which also holds a medical centre, apartments, businesses, offices, a kindergarten and an underground car park.
